On doit au label Aeolus (dont le site offre une section très documentée sur les instruments), l'enrichissante découverte d'orgues du Pays Basque et de Navarre, côté espagnol. Parmi ces orgues figurent le Cavaillé-Coll de San Vicente de San Sébastian ou le Stoltz-Frères de San Pedro Apóstol de Bergara, sur lequel Esteban Elizondo Iriarte a gravé trois CD consacrés à divers compositeurs basques (Luis Urteaga, Eduardo Torres, José Maria Beobide, José Maria Gonzalez Bastida, Francisco Madina) et à l'œuvre, remarquable, de Jesús Guridi (1886-1961).
Le spectre s'élargit dans ce disque avec Felipe Gorriti y Osambela qui, titulaire d'un orgue baroque à Tafalla puis en poste à Santa Maria de Tolosa - où en 1885 les Stoltz érigent un orgue quasi identique au futur trois-claviers de Bergara -, a composé en fonction de la facture instrumentale du lieu. Si l'évolution stylistique est sensible (la Marcha funèbre en do menor serait la première pièce espagnole écrite avec une ligne indépendante pour la pédale), la veine mélodique et harmonique est romantique, riche et séduisante. Des trente Versos aux plus grandes pièces - nombre d'entre elles primées à Paris, dont deux avec voix de soprano (ou ténor) -, la découverte est de taille, Iriarte défend cette musique avec un talent, une énergie et un goût parfaits et la prise de son est extraordinaire !

Felipe Gorriti (1839-96) was born in Navarre in north-central Spain and spent most of his working life in the Basque Country. He is viewed as a transitional figure in Spanish music history, spanning the change from the baroque to French romanticism. Certainly the pieces heard in this recital are thoroughly romantic in style. They are very like the works of Lefebure-Wely (1817-69), the stylish Paris contemporary of Franck. They were composed to be played on an 18th Century Spanish organ with divided manuals and few pedal keys.
Esteban Elizondo Iriarte plays this program on the 2-manual, 25-stop organ by an unknown 18th Century builder in the Convent Church of St Dominic in Pamplona. Famous for its running of the bulls, Pamplona is in Navarre, 40 miles due south of Biarritz, France.
I reviewed a recording by Elizondo playing organ pieces by Guridi in the last issue. This program like that one is superbly played. His registration and phrasing are excellent. This release enlarges our understanding of 19th Century Spanish organ music considerably.
