Rainer Zipperling

Bass viol, Cello

At home on all the world’s concert stages for the past thirty years, Rainer Zipperling has not only made a name for himself as a cellist, but also as a viola da gambist. He numbers among Europe’s leading continuo and chamber music specialists.

As the son of a musician, Rainer Zipperling developed an interest in the cello at a very early age. He chose to study in The Hague, since it was a place where authentic performance practiced was cultivated. There he studied violoncello and viola da gamba. He was and is a member of renowned ensembles and orchestras (Camerata Köln, Orchestra of the 18th Century, Ricercar Ensemble), and has participated in over 200 CD recordings: including Telemann’s Suite for Viola da Gamba and Orchestra and Sammartini’s Concerto for Violoncello Piccolo, which were released on the deutsche harmonia mundi label. As a sought-after teacher, he has taught at the Cologne College of Music and the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, Belgium, as well as at international master courses (Lisbon, Prague, Budapest). His own CD label, “FLORA,” which he founded with his friends Philippe Pierlot and François Fernandez, reflects further aspects of his work: Bach’s Solo Suites for violoncello – widely acclaimed by the press – Haydn’s piano trios and Mozart’s piano quartets, and, as special highlights, Haydn’s bariton trios.
